WHO I am

I practice as a social worker in one of the voluntary welfare organisations in Singapore. In the course of my work, I have the privilege to work with families experiencing financial challenges and/or many other life challenges. I have learnt a lot about human resilience and strength from most of the people from these families.

WHO I am

My name is Bernard Kranen, everybody knows me as Ben. I was born in the 1960s in the Netherlands, and I grew up in a harmonious and loving family. I was always challenged and stimulated to get the best out of me, without any pressure from my parents.

I also learned about the fragility of life at a young age. My sister died of cancer when she was 18 years old. I was 16. That left a lifelong scar, but at the same time helped me to take life a bit more easily, and not let daily problems and setbacks get in the way of enjoying life.

After university graduation, I held positions in the Netherlands and Switzerland before moving over to Singapore.

WHO I am

I am a woman, an ordinary woman – no different from any other. I have the company of my laughter, tears, hopes and fears to fill my days. I am an ordinary woman.

I am an extraordinary woman – different from any other. I have walked a narrow and difficult path, edging my way to recovery and allowing myself to embrace the gift of life in all its complexity and joy. I am an extraordinary woman.

I am Brinda: my parents’ child, my siblings’ sister, aunt to my nephews and niece. I am Brinda: a gem to my family, a treasure to my friends, the sole reason I am me. I am Brinda: a lone leaf of the holy basil, drifting in the breeze of the universe, silent and free.

WHO I am

Mandy Lim Beitler, Freelance Feature Writer

I was born with a congenital bone disease that may have stunted my growth and curtailed my physical activities, but from a tender age, I was determined that it would never define who I was and what I could achieve. For this I thank my parents for their support and belief in me, my teachers and friends at Methodist Girls’ School where I spent my formative years and God for sending me guardian angels and kindred spirits over the years who have in various ways influenced my life and allowed me to touch theirs in return.

Who I Am

“You are like a ‘Nemo’ trapped in a fish bowl.” An athletics coach once said that to me. I was a school teacher and sports coach then. I didn’t grasp the true meaning of that statement until only in recent years—yearning to give through my life lessons learned.

WHO I am

“In my blue uniform, standing outside the gate of my primary school, I looked down at my white pair of shoes. My vision blurry, my hands cold, and with my heart thumping, I quivered, “Where am I?”

I had just turned 11 and the frequent travelling – flying between Singapore and China for my intensive training, and competitions in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries – had already become a way of life. My body suffered from the injuries I got from training, while my mind was confused as to which part of the world I was in. I also felt a pain in my heart as I felt lost in a world so huge, feeling insecure in it as a child would.” - An excerpt from the book I authored, Teach a Life, for Life.

Share  about  the  world  we  live  in

I am an ordinary human being with no fancy title before my name. I can tell you that I’m a photojournalist and a photojournalism teacher, but that would tell you nothing about who I am. I am, Debby Ng, and I’m just trying to what I can with what I have to make a difference because I truly believe that life isn’t worth living, if it isn’t of use to someone else.

For over two decades, I’ve focused on environmental and development issues as human welfare greatly influences the environmental landscape, and vice versa. I try to work from both ends of this spectrum.

In life, I am just a student, and an activist. I can’t help exploring, investigating, and learning about the world and the conditions in which we live in. My instincts are to get down into the nitty gritty. When I
get there, I often find myself trying to do whatever it is I can do to be the change I want to see. This link gives you a glimpse of what I do, www.debbyng.net.
